 VERIFONE INTRODUCES OmniNAC PRODUCT LINE:

WIDE-AREA NETWORK CONCENTRATORS OPTIMIZED FOR TRANSACTION AUTOMATION
REDWOOD CITY, Calif., March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- VeriFone Inc., (NASDAQ: VFIC) today introduced its OmniNAC(TM) line of wide-area network (WAN) concentrators that provide connectivity between point- of-sale (POS) Transaction Automation systems and host computer networks.
The OmniNAC products are the result of a strategic alliance announced last September between VeriFone and Hypercom, Inc. (Phoenix), a leading manufacturer of data communications equipment for network access and transaction delivery. The alliance was formed to help fuel the growth of the worldwide Transaction Automation industry by providing transaction delivery solutions, both in the United States, where transaction response time and communications costs can pose barriers to growth, and internationally, where telecommunications infrastructures may be fragmented and unreliable.
"The OmniNAC products represent one of several logical steps in the evolution of Transaction Automation," said Roger B. Bertman, vice president and general manager of VeriFone's Network Systems Division. "They will open up new opportunities for automating transactions on a global scale by offering shopping malls, department stores, multi-lane establishments and individual shops fast, efficient access to public and private data networks worldwide."
The OmniNAC product line consists of "smart" wide-area network (WAN) concentrator products specialized to provide connectivity between POS systems and the host computer networks used by banks and third-party processors to automate the authorization and processing of transactions based on credit cards, debit cards and checks. OmniNAC and Transaction Automation Architecture
OmniNAC is the latest product developed and introduced under VeriFone's Transaction Automation Architecture (TAA). TAA is a framework or template for defining customer needs and for selectively applying technology to meet those needs.
Consistent with the TAA model, OmniNAC products are provided as part of integrated networking solutions that include VeriFone's POS systems and local area network controllers and terminals. Integrated solutions deliver greater networking efficiencies by lowering communications costs and reducing transaction response times.
OmniNAC systems support VeriFone's widely-used OMNI(TM) and TRANZ(TM) systems, serving as entry points to host computer networks, and VeriFone's TRANZiT(TM) 1200C LAN controller, servicing multiple TRANZ 340 terminals. These systems contain built-in networking capabilities that can leverage the customer's OmniNAC investment. For example, OMNI systems offer a split dial capability that supports both synchronous and asynchronous communications, allowing customers to choose from a broad range of network services and providers. OmniNAC: Optimized for the Transaction Automation Industry
Unlike other general-purpose communications equipment which is sometimes adapted to provide similar functions, OmniNAC is specialized to support the unique communications protocols and message formats required in the Transaction Automation industry. By converting all POS message formats and protocols to interfaces common to most host computers, OmniNAC allows customers to use a wide variety of POS systems in their network configuration without rewriting host programs.
Because OmniNAC is specifically designed for Transaction Automation, transactions are delivered to host computers more efficiently. OmniNAC concentrates the bursts of relatively low volume transaction data from multiple POS systems into a single, economical path and transmits this information to host computers at high speeds, reducing communications and host computer costs.
OmniNAC products support public, private, dial and leased-line connections and provide an efficient gateway to existing networks, including X.25 and Systems Network Architecture (SNA), IBM's widely installed distributed networking architecture. OmniNAC also supports advanced telecommunications technologies such as T1, E1, ISDN and telco access features such as feature groups B and D.
OmniNAC also supports NetView, IBM's network management system. OmniNAC Architecture
OmniNAC systems have a unique modular architecture that allows customers to pay only for what is used, and to grow their systems in affordable increments. Four OmniNAC chassis are available to match the scope of customer networks. OmniNAC 1, 6, and 16 contain 1, 6, and 17 microprocessor cards, respectively. OmniNAC 24 supports T1 access with up to 24 logical channels per T1, and is suitable for larger networks. Proven Components Reduce Mainframe Costs
The OmniNAC products are based on core components that have been marketed for years by Hypercom to installations throughout Asia and Latin America. Besides concentrating data transactions close to the point-of-service, OmniNAC also frees the host from many simple communication tasks, increasing throughput for transaction processing. Centralized Control
The OmniNAC product line is supported by a dedicated network management and monitoring system called the Network Management System (NMS). Designed to ensure uninterrupted transaction processing, the Network Management System provides all the information customers need to manage their networks and avoid costly downtime. The NMS allows OmniNAC customers to configure, install, monitor and change Transaction Automation networks on a personal computer from a central location. Centralized control reduces facility and personnel costs by minimizing the need for field troubleshooting. OmniNAC Distribution
The OmniNAC product line will be available first in the United States, Asia and Latin America. In the United States, specially trained VeriFone communications marketing teams will offer OmniNAC Transaction Automation network and system solutions to banks, processors, value-added resellers (VARs), system integrators and independent sales organizations (ISOs).
Internationally, OmniNAC products will be sold and supported by the VeriFone International Partners (VIPs), the company's worldwide network of distributors and VARs. Availability and Pricing
The OmniNAC 1, 6, 16 and 24 are available now. Customers can obtain system recommendations and pricing from their local VeriFone account representatives. The Company
