VERBATIM TO MARKET AND DISTRIBUTE IBM WRITE-ONCE READ-MANY OPTICAL DISK CARTRIDGES

CHARLOTTE, N.C., Sept. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Verbatim Corporation today announced that it has signed an agreement with IBM's (NYSE: IBM) Storage Systems Division which authorizes Verbatim to manufacture, market and distribute the IBM brand 650 MB and 1.3 GB 5.25" optical disk cartridges for the IBM 3995 Optical Library Dataserver products and IBM 0632 CB Models Multifunction Optical Drives. The agreement, effective Nov. 1, 1993, makes Verbatim the distributor of IBM brand WORM media in the United States, Canada and most of Latin America.
The IBM write-once read-many (WORM) optical disk cartridges are based on ablative technology which creates a permanent mark on the disk, assuring the permanence of the data and creating a data audit trail. IBM's 3995 Optical Library Dataserver is available for IBM environments including ES/9000, AS/400, RISC System/6000 and LAN configurations, and for non-IBM environments including Ethernet, Novell and TCP/IP. The IBM 3995 Dataserver supports a variety of applications in such areas as imaging, including the IBM SAA(TM) Image Plus products, Computer Output to Laser Disk (COLD), and hierarchical data management.
"This agreement joins one of the most trusted names in computer storage technology with one of the most trusted names in image and data storage media," said Nicky Hartery, president of Verbatim. "We've had an excellent relationship with IBM on a number of products for several years and currently produce IBM brand 650 MB WORM media for IBM. This agreement makes us the exclusive distributor of IBM brand WORM media in the United States, Canada and most portions of Latin America."
The media will be sold through Verbatim's distribution sales force. In addition, Verbatim will set up a telemarketing unit to handle inquiries and provide service to IBM WORM media customers.
"We are experts on optical drives, library systems and their attachment to various computing platforms, and we want to focus our energies on providing solutions for the business needs of our customers," said Dr. Victor Jipson, optical products manager, IBM Storage Systems Division.
"This agreement with Verbatim, one of the world's largest producers of optical disks, allows them to continue to produce the media to IBM's rigorous specifications, thus assuring our customers of a dependable supply of high quality IBM brand WORM media."
