VERBATIM MOVES INTO CD-ROM, CD-R BUSINESS

CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 22 /PRNewswire/ -- Verbatim Corporation -- the world's largest volume producer of optical disks -- announces its move into the CD-ROM and CD-R (recordable CD) business.
Already an expert in rewritable and write-once optical disk technology, now Verbatim adds complete CD-ROM mastering and replication services and CD-R discs to its wide range of products and services.
"Many of our customers are involved in software publishing and distribution and most have been considering whether to produce CD-ROM versions of their products," says John Stevens, Verbatim manager of business development.
"With nearly five million CD-ROM drives installed, we felt it was time to move into this business for the benefit of our customers."
With CD-ROM, a master is produced and then duplicates are pressed. CD-ROM provides a 640MB capacity platform, perfect for high capacity software applications and database distribution. The text from 200 dictionaries would fit on one CD.
"CD-R, or recordable CD, is an ideal complement to CD-ROM," says Stevens. "It is perfect for prototyping software titles, archiving data or production of discs for limited distribution."
Verbatim's CD-R product incorporates an exclusive write-once dye recording layer which provides excellent archival life and unprecedented protection against UV degradation. Verbatim's CD-R discs conform to Orange Book standards. Once recorded, they can be read by existing CD-ROM drives thus creating an installed base of almost 5 million data readers.
