 VERBATIM CORPORATION TO ACQUIRE CARLISLE
 QUARTER-INCH DATA CARTRIDGE BUSINESS
CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Verbatim Corporation today announces it has reached in principle an agreement to purchase the quarter-inch data cartridge (QIC) business-related assets from Carlisle Memory Products Group, Inc.
The transaction, between Charlotte-based Verbatim Corporation and the Syracuse, N.Y.-based Carlisle Companies, Inc. (NYSE: CSL), with its subsidiary Carlisle Memory Products Group, Inc., is subject to approval by the directors of both companies. Closing is anticipated by the end of March 1992.
"This acquisition makes Verbatim a fully-integrated manufacturer of backup storage media, and fortifies the tape portion of our business," says Nicky Hartery, President of Verbatim Corporation.
"Our recent purchase of Philips and Du Pont Optical's MO disk business, along with the powerful research, development and manufacturing resources of Mitsubishi Kasei, gives Verbatim the largest optical disk production capacities in the world. Combined with the acquisition of Carlisle's data cartridge business, we are now positioned as one of the leading manufacturers and marketers of a complete line of data and image storage media," Hartery continues.
"Recently, Verbatim has launched an aggressive bid to take a leadership role in virtually every aspect of both optical and magnetic media," says William Kopatich, vice president of Verbatim.
"Our product line now includes rewritable, WORM, and O-ROM optical media, a complete range of floppy disks, including 4MB and very high density floppy disks (20+ MB), and a full spectrum of tape products, including data cassettes, 1/2" reel tape, data certified 4mm and 8mm data cartridges, 3480 cartridges, and quarter-inch data cartridges. The Carlisle purchase enhances our data cartridge line and will provide our customers with one reliable source for high quality computer media of all types," Kopatich continues.
"Quarter-inch data cartridge technology is the most proven and widely used tape backup system available for small and midrange computers and computer networks. It is expected to remain the backup industry leader for many years into the future as multi-gigabyte capacity drives and cartridges are introduced."
Verbatim will continue to honor Carlisle's branded, private label and OEM quarter-inch data cartridge commitments with existing customers.
"Carlisle is recognized in the industry and by end-users as a manufacturer of only the highest quality products," says Hartery. "Verbatim shares the same reputation as a manufacturer and marketer of high quality optical and magnetic media products. As a team, we will continue the tradition."
Verbatim Corporation, a subsidiary of Mitsubishi Kasei Corporation, was established in 1969. The company is headquartered in Charlotte, N.C. and has more than 1,600 employees worldwide.
