VENTURIAN CORP.'S NAPCO SUBSIDIARY NAMED IN JUSTICE DEPARTMENT SUIT
MINNEAPOLIS, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Venturian Corp. (NASDAQ: VENT) announced today that the U.S. Justice Department has brought civil suit against Venturian's Napco International, Inc. subsidiary in Federal District Court in Minneapolis. The suit alleges that Napco filed false claims with the government in collecting payment for approximately $383,000 of sales made to the government of Turkey financed by the U.S. Foreign Military Sales Program in 1985 through 1989. In particular, the suit claims that certain merchandise supplied to Turkey by Napco was not of U.S. origin, as required by the provisions of the Foreign Military Sales Program, and as certified by Napco.
The suit seeks to recover damages trebled and civil penalties related to the alleged false claims.
Gary B. Rappaport, Venturian's chairman, president and chief executive officer, called the Justice Department's action "vindictive, unnecessary and outside the normal course of action for resolving such disputes. We are very disappointed that the Justice Department has brought legal action against Napco despite our expressed and demonstrated willingness to cooperate with the investigation and reach an amicable settlement of this matter. We firmly believe that no damages were suffered by the government. Napco will vigorously defend itself against these allegations," said Rappaport.
Napco International, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Venturian Corp., supplies a wide variety of defense-related products to the U.S. government and to the governments of more than 60 nations throughout the world.
