VEGGING OUT: At the moment, more seems to be coming out of the vegetable beds than is going in. Lettuces past their best, peas we've cropped and rocket run to flower are added to the compost heap to make way for some late crops.

On the plus side, we've been eating healthily and well. There are all sorts of green beans, including a prolific white-flowered runner bean - 'White Apollo' - and a very fine dwarf French bean called 'Eclarel'.

This is the first time we've grown either of them and they're both superb. First of all, the flavour is unrivalled - as should be the priority with any vegetables.

Both are prolific and they have been producing for weeks now.

And from the emerging flower buds, they don't look as if they're about to give up.
