VECTOR AEROMOTIVE'S 1994 AVTECH WX3-R 'ROADSTER' WORLD DEBUTS AT THE GENEVA MOTOR SHOW WITH WX3-C 'COUPE'
Vector Aeromotive Corp. Announces Lower Pricing Structures and the Availability of Distributorships for Avtech GENEVA, March 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Expanding its positioning in the international supercar market, Vector Aeromotive Corp. (NASDAQ: VCAR) today debuted the evolutionary Avtech WX3-R "Roadster" at the Geneva International Motor Show. The all-new Roadster retains Vector's signature aerodynamic styling, high output performance and NASA- derived aerospace technology that is found throughout the Vector model line. The WX3-R is targeted at the entry-level end ($175,000-$250,000) of the luxury exotic supercar market segment. The consumers who comprise this market segment consist of affluent individuals and collectors, some of whom already own other exotic supercars. Moreover, these consumers identify with the unparalleled quality, performance and reliability in a vehicle that makes a dramatic personal statement. Vector's bold "Aerotech" style is further intensified by a fresh palette of striking colors that underscore the dynamic statement of expressing energy, life and sophistication. "Inspiration for the design of the WX3-R came from my personal ownership of convertible-type cars throughout seven years of college," said Gerald A. Wiegert, Vector's chief executive officer, chairman and designer. "All Vectors are designed, engineered and prototyped in-house, further proving the company's multirole capabilities." In announcing the planned 1994 model year WX3 price points, Wiegert commented that his production team has reduced various manufacturing costs and has improved production throughout Vector's two-year production history. This has allowed Vector to position the higher-production WX3 models at lower price points for the company's long-term expansion. "We will increase our market share by reaching more buyers worldwide who will be excited about a lower-priced Vector," added Robert Braner, vice president of sales and marketing for Vector. "The lower prices make our cars very attractive to distributors and auto dealers who are interested in new ideas and showroom traffic." The manufacturer's suggested retail price (MSRP) for the lowest- priced WX3-R with options, is targeted to be $239,000, while the WX3- C is projected at $257,000. The higher-tech, higher-horesepower (600+) models are projected to be priced at $348,000 for the Roadster and $375,000 for the Coupe. The company will accept orders for the 1994 models at the Geneva Motor Show, as production for both models is scheduled for 1993 delivery. Prices that were projected last year for the WX3 7-liter prototype coupe, which received its world debut at the 1992 Geneva Motor Show, are superseded by the new lower-price structures on both the new WX3-R and WX3-C models. Vector will concentrate on the lower-priced '94 models to be more cost-competitive with Ferrari and Lamborghini. Furthermore, Wiegert announced that total production on the company's benchmark Vector W8 model will be limited to approximately 30 cars. The base price for the limited edition Vector W8 is $448,000. Vector has built 22 W8s to date. Vector expects the W8 to maintain a high resale value because of its very limited and exclusive production numbers. Vector is assuring customers of the vehicle's good investment value by maintaining handmade exclusivity. In the WX3-R, Vector has responded to a flood of requests for a convertible without compromising the integrity of the vehicle's aerodynamic lines. A removable hard top will be incorporated into the overall design, as well as an optional lightweight, foldable soft top. "These cars are designed and intended to be driven on a daily basis and are not meant to be just showroom toys for limited use," added Wiegert. New to Vector this year are two optional engine packages for both the WX3 Coupe and the WX3 Roadster. Serving as the base for both higher-priced models is the proven Vector-built and engineered 6- liter, twin-turbocharged, all-aluminum V8 engine. The proprietary powerplant produces more than 650 horsepower at 5,700 rpm and 600+ ft/lbs of torque at 4,900 rpm. "In recent engine dyno tests, the Avtech's new dual plenum 6-liter engine developed 810 horsepower," observed David Kostka, Vector's vice president of engineering. A 5.7-liter V8 engine with a supercharger option is planned for both entry-level Roadster and Coupe models. "This is intended to appeal to those who are not so interested in ultra-high performance, but want high style at a lower price," said Kostka. The smaller displacement engine will be available as soon as the customer/distributor backlog quota is reached. An optional 7.0 liter twin turbocharged, 4-valve V8 engine is also available upon special request. The race-bred 7-liter engine is capable of producing 850-1200 horsepower with more than 800 ft/lbs of torque. True to its aerospace heritage, the WX3-R incorporates large integrated inlets and air passage outlets, fully functional aerodynamic rear wing styled to the body and tail section for downforce at speed. "Every component is designed to serve a purpose," said Wiegert. "I am not drawn into adding styling elements just for looks -- they must be functional." For example, the steeply raked full-size wraparound windshield enhances the dramatic presentation, yet it provides maximum wind deflection for occupant comfort and safety. This large windshield provides the widest panoramic view of any supercar. The WX3-R is constructed from carbon fiber/Kevlar(TM) epoxy composites, and is wider and shorter than the WX3 Coupe version. Both vehicles incorporate a U.S. Department of Transportation- approved, crash-tested structure incorporating chrome moly tube steel roll cage and hand-riveted with aircraft fasteners to an aluminum honeycomb flat floor panel. The structure is engineered with energy- absorbing crush zones to provide maximum occupant protection. Vector has never failed a federal DOT crash test. All production Vectors are EPA-certified, as well as CARB in California. To enhance everyday driveability, the Vector WX3 Roadster's cockpit has been equipped with luxurious appointments. Features include an all-leather interior, high-output air conditioning, driver side airbag Supplemental Restraint System (SRS), ratchet automatic/manual shifting and power steering with an adjustable column. A high-end custom-designed Infinity(TM) sound system featuring an in-dash 10-disc compact disc changer, AM-FM tuner and cassette tape and powered by miniature Class D digital amplifiers. Unique to Vector is the aircraft-type military-designed four-mode programmable menu-driven display that monitors all engine functions. All wiring and electrical switches and connectors, with gold-plated contacts, are supplied from military subcontractors to ensure the highest quality. High-speed performance for the WX3-R is enhanced with Bridgestone-supplied 17-inch front and 18-inch rear high performance specialty tires mounted to Speedline modular wheels. Together, they are rated above 200 mph sustained speeds. The wheels are tires are the widest available that are certified for the street. The complete line of aerospace-engineered and American handcrafted Vector supercars are available through an expanding dealership network.
