VCR PLUS+(R) SYSTEM BECOMES WORLD STANDARD FOR VCR TAPING

Consumers, Retailers, VCR Manufacturers & Media, Worldwide Recognize
Benefits of VCR Plus+(R) Instant Programmer(TM)
PASADENA, Calif., Nov. 19 ~PRNewswire~ -- When entrepreneurs Henry Yuen and Daniel Kwoh launched the VCR Plus+(R) Instant Programming(TM) in 1990, no one could have predicted the overwhelming success of their revolutionary one-step video cassette recorder taping system. The VCR Plus+ Instant Programmer and Pasadena-based Gemstar Development Corp. made VCR taping possible for many of the more than 70 million U.S. VCR owners. Research indicated that prior to using the VCR Plus+ system, the majority of these consumers were only able to use their VCRs to play back rented tapes.
Now, with a U.S. distribution base of 26,000 retailers and international availability, the VCR Plus+ system allows consumers world-wide to realize the potential of their VCRs -- to create customized television viewing schedules and to finally take full advantage of the concept of "timeshifting."
In two short years, Gemstar has created a world standard for VCR taping. Recently, 90 percent of the world VCR manufacturers signed licensing agreements to feature the VCR Plus+ programming system in their new VCRs. These agreements mark the first time that a taping system other than the one developed by the VCR manufacturer has been incorporated into a VCR.
"The overwhelming consumer response has been instrumental in establishing the VCR Plus+ system as the world standard in VCR programming," said Louise J. Wannier, chief operating officer for Gemstar. "It's quickly becoming the 'Dolby(R)' of videocassette recorders. Like Dolby, it's another instance of an independently produced technology refining and popularizing an existing product."
The VCR Plus+ system is also being launched worldwide. The VCR Plus+ Instant Programmer was introduced in Canada and the United Kingdom during 1991, with Japan, Korea, France and New Zealand following in 1992. New markets in Europe, Southeast Asia and South America are scheduled for launch in 1993.
Gemstar has built a powerful network of partners in the process of establishing its VCR Plus+ programming system. The VCR Plus+ system offers unique opportunities to broadcasters, publishers, advertisers and manufacturers that enable these once separate entities to work together for their mutual benefit.
For example, Gemstar has successfully established relationships with TV Guide and more than 700 newspapers worldwide (circulation of 70 million in North America). Through these relationships, television listing guides publish the PlusCode(TM) numbers that consumers punch in for instant taping with the VCR Plus+ system. By offering the PlusCode numbers, publishers are able to offer their subscribers and readers an added service with considerable value.
Simultaneously, by making the VCR Plus+ system accessible to millions of consumers, publishers are also increasing the frequency with which television programs are taped, thereby enhancing the audience for broadcasters. And, as television taping becomes increasingly accessible and popular through the VCR Plus+ system, newspapers' publication of VCR Plus+ PlusCode numbers becomes an important reader service that continues to grow in value.
"Increased VCR Plus+ system acceptance worldwide -- through global product roll-outs and the unprecedented number of VCR licensing agreements -- provides growing benefits to consumers and to our partners," continued Wannier. "Consumers, retailers, VCR manufacturers and print and broadcast media are all feeling the increasing positive impact of the VCR Plus+ system. This positive impact translates into increased VCR usage, additional audiences for broadcasters, added services for newspaper readers, effective cross promotions and more excitement at retail."
VCR Plus+ system users simply punch in PlusCode numbers for television programs from television listing guides. The VCR Plus+ Instant Programmer then turns on the VCR, sets the VCR or cable box to the correct channel, automatically records selected programs and turns off the VCR at the appropriate time.
Only the VCR Plus+ system offers control of both the cable box and the VCR. For the first time, with the VCR Plus+ system, cable box users can record several television programs without having to be at home to change channels on the cable box. The VCR Plus+ Instant Programmer also stores up to 14 programs in memory, more than double the capacity of most VCRs. In addition, the system calculates the amount of tape required in the next 24 hours.
Gemstar Development Corp., a privately held company, was formed to develop and market technological products which simplify life for the consumer. The company is headquartered at 135 N. Los Robles Ave., Suite 870, Pasadena, CA 91101.
