VARLEN NAMES RAYMOND JEAN EVP & CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER

 NAPERVILLE, Ill., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Raymond A. Jean, 50, has been promoted to the newly created position of executive vice president and chief operating officer of Varlen Corp. (NASDAQ-NMS: VRLN), the company announced today. The appointment is effective Feb. 1.
 Jean was formerly group vice president, responsible for Varlen's laboratory, truck and auto businesses.
 Richard L. Wellek, president and CEO, noted that "Jean possesses a broad background in all aspects of our business operations and has had a major part in the growth Varlen has enjoyed to date, both here and abroad. We're very pleased to have a senior executive with his extensive experience taking on this expanded role in the company's development."
 Prior to joining Varlen in 1988, Jean was with Pneumo/Abex Corp., an IC Industries, Inc. subsidiary, where he served as group vice president, fluid power; president and general manager, railroad products division; and vice president and general manager, trackwork division.
 Before that, he held senior management positions with Evans Products Co., Gulf & Western Inc. and Allis-Chalmers Corp.
 Jean is a member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers. He holds a bachelor's degree in engineering physics from the University of Maine, and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Chicago.
 Varlen designs, manufactures and markets engineered industrial products, primarily for specialized applications in the transportation and laboratory equipment markets. The company serves U.S. and foreign markets with operating locations in the United States and Germany. Headquarters are in Naperville. The common stock is traded over-the- counter on the NASDAQ National Market System under the symbol VRLN.
