VARITY NAMES LUIZ F. KAHL TO BOARD OF DIRECTORS

 BUFFALO, N.Y., Feb. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Varity Corporation (NYSE: VAT) has named a second prominent international business executive to its board of directors, Victor A. Rice, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, announced today.
 The new director is Luiz F. Kahl, president and chief executive of The Carborundum Company, Niagara Falls, N.Y.
 Mr. Kahl, a native of Brazil and a U.S. citizen, joined Carborundum in 1961 and held senior executive posts in Latin America, Europe and the United States before he was appointed president in 1984. He is also chief executive of BP Advanced Materials, which like Carborundum is a unit of British Petroleum p.l.c. A professional engineer, he holds degrees from the University of Rio de Janerio and the University of Houston. He was awarded an honorary doctorate of commercial science from Niagara University.
 He is a director of the National Fuel Gas Company and the Greater Buffalo Development Foundation, and also serves on the advisory board of the School of Management, SUNY at Buffalo; the board of regents at Canisius College; and the board of trustees at the Children's Hospital of Buffalo.
 With the announcement of the appointment of Sir Bryan Nicholson to the board yesterday, the Varity board's membership has increased to 10.
 Varity Corporation is one of the 150 largest U.S. industrial concerns, with sales in 1991 of approximately $3.2 billion. Varity's international operations include Kelsey-Hayes anti-lock braking systems and other automotive components, Massey Ferguson farm machinery, and Perkins diesel engines.
