 VARITY CORPORATION'S PERKINS UNIT RECEIVES
 DIESEL ENGINE CONTRACT FROM CHRYSLER
BUFFALO, N.Y., Oct. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- Varity Corporation (NYSE: VAT) announced today that its Perkins Group has been awarded a multi-million dollar contract to produce diesel engines for the Chrysler Corporation (NYSE: C) in Mexico City.
Perkins will provide its six-cylinder, turbocharged Phaser diesel engine for Chrysler new range of Dodge eight-ton PD600 series trucks that are sold in Mexico. Perkins said the initial engines for the contract will be supplied from their plant in Peterborough, England, but production soon will be transferred to a Perkin's licensee, Mopesa, in Toluca, Mexico.
"Our association with Chrysler in Mexico goes back 25 years and this very important new business begins a new chapter in this valued relationship," said Tony Gilroy, managing director of Perkins. He noted that Mexico is a major market for Perkins, where over 300,000 Perkins engines were currently in use powering a variety of on and off-highway applications.
"This is a significant vote of confidence from a world-class automobile manufacturer in Perkins' ability to meet increasingly stringent environmental and performance standards," Mr. Gilroy said. He added that the Perkins Phaser engines had been certified to meet 1991 U.S. Federal emission standards and were developed with the intention of meeting the more demanding U.S. 1994 and European 1996 regulations.
Perkins supplies diesel engines to more than 600 manufacturers of original equipment throughout the world. Sales in 1991 were $647 million.
In addition to Perkins, Varity Corporation's businesses include Massey Ferguson farm equipment and Kelsey-Hayes automotive components and anti-lock braking systems. Varity had sales of $3.2 billion and is one of the 150 largest industrial companies in the United States.
