VARITY'S PERKINS UNIT TO SUPPLY DIESEL ENGINES
 TO CATERPILLAR IN 10-YEAR AGREEMENT
BUFFALO, N.Y., Jan. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Varity Corporation's (NYSE: VAT) Perkins diesel engine group will supply Caterpillar Inc. with engines for Caterpillar equipment and for direct sale to customers around the world under a major 10-year agreement announced today. The contract is expected to nearly triple Perkins sales to Caterpillar over the life of the agreement.
Varity, said Perkins, whose main plants are located in the United Kingdom, has developed special versions of its high-technology 1000 Series industrial diesel engine range for the Caterpillar contract. The engines, four and six cylinder models spanning 55 to 150 kW (73-200 brake horsepower), will carry the Caterpillar nameplate.
As a Caterpillar supplier for nearly 20 years, Perkins has already delivered some 150,000 engines for Caterpillar machinery, including backhoe loaders and road repair equipment. Caterpillar is the world's largest producer of earth-moving and construction machinery and a major manufacturer of larger industrial and automotive diesels.
 J. Anthony Gilroy, Varity group vice president in charge of Perkins, described the agreement as "a major step forward and a welcome new chapter in a long and successful relationship." He said the contract represented a major customer's expression of confidence in Perkins' ability to meet increasingly stringent environmental standards in international markets.
Perkins, whose product range spans five to 1,500 horsepower, supplies engines to more than 600 manufacturers of original equipment throughout the world. Varity Corporation is a major industrial management company whose worldwide operations also include Kelsey-Hayes automotive components and Massey Ferguson farm and industrial machinery.
