 VARITRONICS SAYS FOURTH QUARTER SALES WERE DOWN;
 BREAK-EVEN RESULTS EXPECTED
 MINNEAPOLIS, Aug. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Varitronic Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRSY) said today that net sales for the fourth quarter ended July 31, 1992, are likely to total about $8.9 million, down from $9.1 million in the fourth quarter of the preceding year.
 "Production and shipping activities came to a halt on July 28 when an armed intruder took control of our plant for several hours and caused damage to our facility," said Scott Drill, chairman, president and CEO. "As a result, approximately $1 million in orders that we had expected to ship prior to the end of the fiscal year were not shipped until the following week.
 "We expect financial results for the fourth quarter to be at approximately a break-even level and first quarter 1993 results to be positively impacted by the delayed shipments."
 Separately, Varitronics announced today that it plans the introduction of two new products this fall. The EasyStep(TM) 4000 is a versatile custom labeling system that prints high quality, durable labels for a variety of industrial labeling and signage applications. The PosterLynx(TM) connects IBM-compatible computers to Varitronics' PosterPrinter(TM) Plus to produce professional-looking charts and banners faster and at lower costs than commercial methods. The company also said that it has entered into an agreement with MAX CO., LTD., of Japan under which Varitronics has been granted exclusive rights to market and sell MAX lettering machines and related supplies throughout North America.
 Varitronics is a Minnesota-based developer, manufacturer and marketer of graphics products that enhance the quality, professionalism and effectiveness of a wide range of communications.
