VARITRONICS REPORTS SUBSTANTIAL INCREASES IN SALES AND EARNINGS FOR SECOND QUARTER ENDED JANUARY 31, 1993

 MINNEAPOLIS, Feb. 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Varitronic Systems, Inc. (NASDAQ: VRSY) announced today that earnings for its second quarter ended Jan. 31, 1993, increased 103 percent to $831,000, or 30 cents per share, from $410,000, or 12 cents per share, in the second quarter of last year. Income from operations increased 182 percent to $1,068,000 in the current quarter from $379,000 in the year-ago period. Net sales for the quarter ended Jan. 31, 1993, were $11,166,000, which represented an increase of 32 percent over sales of $8,451,000 in the comparable quarter last year.
 Earnings for the six-month period ended Jan. 31, 1993, were $1,470,000, or 52 cents per share, which represented an increase of 48 percent over earnings of $991,000, or 28 cents per share, in the comparable period last year. Net sales for the six months ended Jan. 31, 1993, increased 27 percent to $22,428,000 from $17,703,000 in the year-ago period.

"The substantial increases in sales and earnings over the prior year's results are attributable to the success of our new products. In the quarter ended Jan. 31, 1993, approximately $2.8 million in sales came from new product lines not offered by Varitronics one year ago."
 Varitronics' new product lines include: 1) the portable AccentTM labeling system introduced in February 1992, 2) three lettering systems being sold under an exclusive U.S. distribution agreement with Max Co., Ltd., and 3) Varitronics' newest system, the Easy Step(TM) 4000 Label and Sign Maker, introduced in late October 1992.
 Varitronics is a Minnesota-based developer, manufacturer and marketer of business graphics systems that satisfy a variety of presentation, labeling and signage needs.
