VANITY FAIR LINGERIE IS FIRST CORPORATE FOUNDING MEMBER OF GILDA'S CLUB; COMPANY DONATES ONE MILLION DOLLARS TO HELP SUPPORT PEOPLE WITH CANCER

NEW YORK, April 22 /PRNewswire/ -- In an effort to help people with cancer and their families through a psychological and social support program, Vanity Fair Mills, Inc. today announced it has pledged one million dollars to support Gilda's Club.
Gilda's Club was founded by actor Gene Wilder in memory of his wife, comedienne Gilda Radner. "It was Gilda's final wish to provide a place where cancer patients could go, alone or with their families, to learn how to shake off their feelings of hopelessness and isolation and reclaim their gift of laughter and zest for life," explained Gene Wilder.
"Vanity Fair's financial commitment will enable the first Gilda's Club to open its doors this fall in New York City," said Joanna Bull, M.F.C.C., director of Gilda's Club and Gilda Radner's psychotherapist during her battle with ovarian cancer. "Our hope is that other corporations will follow Vanity Fair's example by supporting this much needed facility which until now, has been a missing part of total cancer care."
"Cancer touches the lives of so many, whether it's a friend, family member, yourself or someone you just felt you knew, like Gilda Radner," said Peter Velardi, chairman and CEO of Vanity Fair Mills, Inc. and board member of Gilda's Club. "We're utilizing the Vanity Fair Lingerie brand as a vehicle to raise awareness for this remarkable program, and we're extending an invitation to both our retail partners and consumers to support Gilda's Club. We're confident that the New York facility will be the first of many Gilda's Clubs across the United States and we're committed to helping achieve this goal."
Beginning this Fall, Vanity Fair Lingerie garments will have a signature Gilda's Club tag with information on the organization and an invitation to consumers to write for more details. Vanity Fair will support Gilda's Club through a variety of special events and promotions.
The first Gilda's Club is scheduled to open its doors this Fall in New York City at 195 West Houston St. Designed as a free, non-profit and non-residential facility, Gilda's Club will offer group and individual counselling, lectures, workshops and social events, including pot luck suppers and "joke fests," in a conveniently located, home-like setting where a sense of shared involvement and humor prevail.
In addition, one floor of the four-story New York brownstone will be designated as the National Training Center, providing professionals -- including therapists, physicians, fund raisers and community representatives -- with the opportunity to learn how Gilda's Club works and how to lay the groundwork for opening a new Gilda's Club.
"At Gilda's Club, men and women dealing with all different kinds of cancer, along with their families and healthcare teams, will work together to become informed and energetic participants in their efforts toward recovery," said Ms. Bull.
In addition to full support of the New York medical community, Gilda's Club has received an outpouring of support from influentials that include Ann S. Moore, publisher of People magazine; Joel Siegel, television critic and commentator; author Erma Bombeck; Mandy Patinkin, actor and singer; as well as actors Anne Bancroft, Mel Brooks, John Candy, Jane Curtain, Steve Guttenberg, Rick Moranis and many others.
Gilda's Club is funded entirely by gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations. A five-year plan calls for raising a total of 10 million dollars to establish a significant endowment fund to ensure permanence of the service and open new Gilda's Clubs across the United States.
