VANCOUVER STOCK EXCHANGE APRIL VOLUME SETS NEW RECORD

 VANCOUVER, British Columbia, May 6 /PRNewswire/ -- Trading on the Vancouver Stock Exchange (VSE) continued to climb during April as volume for the month set a new all-time record high.
 Volume increased 15 percent over the previous month to reach 613 million shares, surpassing the previous record of 582 million set during August 1989. Value of shares traded rose by 5 percent over March, to $629 million. Volume, value and transactions for April were more than double the corresponding figures for April 1992.
 For the first time since Sept. 20, 1988, the Composite Index broke through the 900 point barrier, closing at 914.93. During the month the Composite Index gained on 17 of the 21 trading sessions. While all of the sub-indices experienced gains, the resource index led the way with a 16 percent rise. The Venture and Commercial/Industrial indices followed with 14 and 2 percent gains, respectively. At month-end, the market capitalization of the 1,280 companies included in the Composite Index was $5.9 billion.
 The exchange's senior board increased its share of volume over the previous month from 16 percent to 17 percent, while its share of total value slid slightly to 29 percent.
 While financings for April dropped by 23 percent from the previous month, the year-to-date totals for 1993 were 48 percent higher than the totals for the same period of 1992.
 Of the 1,803 issues listed on the VSE at month-end, 265 posted new highs and 64 posted new lows during the month. The most active stocks by volume included Chutine Resources (Venture), Commonwealth Gold (Resource), Adrian Resources (Resource), Layfield Resources (Venture) and Arbor Resources (Resource).
 The VSE began trading equity options on the common shares of Canadian Occidental Petroleum Ltd. and Sceptre Resources Ltd. on April 19. This brings the number Trans Canada Options classes exclusively traded on the VSE to 20.
 Listings
 Two companies listed on the VSE during April, compared to four in the previous month and two in the same month last year.
 Of the new listings, Vancouver-based Regeena Resources Inc. was called for trading on April 16. The company is engaged in the acquisition, exploration and development of resource properties. Board game developer, Spectrum Games Corp. was called for trading on April 26. The company is based in Vancouver.
 Four reverse take-overs were completed during April, compared to one in March and two in April of last year. Tm Technologies Corp., DBA Telecom Corp., Eurocontrol Technics Inc. and Soligen Technologies Inc. are all involved in non-resource businesses.
 One company was upgraded to the Senior Board this month, the same as the previous month, compared to two in April 1992. Edinov Technologies was upgraded to the Commercial/Industrial section on April 8.
 Six companies were delisted during the month, compared to 62 last month and eight during the same month last year.
