VALUEVISION NETWORK'S HOME SHOPPING PROGRAMS COME TO ATLANTA
MINNEAPOLIS, Dec. 19 /PRNewswire/ -- ValueVision International, Inc. (NASDAQ: VVTVA, VVTVU), today announced it is bringing its new television home shopping programs to Atlanta-area residents, on W20AU-TV, Channel 20.
ATLANTA PART OF INITIAL TELEVISION SHOPPING NETWORK
"Atlanta is one of the six cities we targeted for the initial ValueVision Network," said CEO Bob Johander. "Although ValueVision may be a new name to viewers, many of us came from the former Cable Value Network (CVN). One example is on-air host Carmela Richards, who has been called 'the Vanna White of television home shopping' by People magazine."
ENTERTAINING HOSTS, MERCHANDISE VALUES, CUSTOMER SERVICE AND
"We took what we learned at CVN and developed an even more appealing format," Johander explained. "First, we have recognizable personalities, such as Carmela, Susan Garrett, Charla Rines, Mike Sullivan, Eddie Nelson, Wes McCoy and Steve Sedahl. Second, we think entertainment is important and want our viewers to have fun watching the show. We really enjoy talking with the people who call in and getting to know them -- and sharing their comments with other viewers. Third, we truly believe in the 'value' part of our name. The merchandise we offer, from a gold nugget necklace to a set of glass-blown, hand-painted Christmas ornaments, is good quality at a competitive price. We like to offer unique, hard to find products. One example is a collector's set containing a copy of the 1977 Memphis newspaper that announced the death of Elvis Presley, a ticket for the concert he was never to give and a videotape on his life. Fourth, if we had a middle name, it would be 'convenience.' Our customers don't have to search for a parking place, then scour a store for someone who can help them find a product, then answer their questions about it. In addition, our operators are trained to be helpful and our sophisticated computer system allows us to take orders efficiently and ship products promptly -- many times within 24 hours."
EXPANDED LIVE PROGRAMMING ON FIVE-STATION NETWORK
ValueVision began originating home shopping programs in mid-October from its headquarters/studio in a suburb of Minneapolis, Minn. Programming is sent via General Electric's Satcom F4 satellite, transponder 10, to cities where the company has low power television (LPTV) stations, sometimes called community television stations. These stations (currently on the air in Atlanta, Houston, Cleveland, Detroit and Minneapolis, and planned for St. Louis) have a six-to-25-mile broadcasting radius. Satellite dish owners also receive ValueVision programs. (For the Atlanta metropolitan area, ValueVision's antenna is located at Sweatmountain at Marietta.)
The company currently broadcasts live programs from 9 a.m. to 1 a.m., EST, on weekends, and from 1 p.m. to 1 a.m., EST, on weekdays.
"Our message to home shopping enthusiasts is: 'We're back and we're better!'" Johander concluded.
ValueVision International was founded in 1990 by several executives who helped build Cable Value Network into the second-largest television home shopping network. Through ValueVision, they are developing the first television home shopping network primarily using low power community television stations. This approach allows the company to target many of the more than 46 million American households who either use a satellite dish or do not have cable television. The company also is exploring possible cable and other broadcast television affiliation arrangements. ValueVision's television production, order response and warehouse facilities are located at its headquarters in a suburb of Minneapolis, with supplemental merchandising activities conducted on its behalf by Euro-American Marketing, Ltd. of New York.
