According to a recent study, business intelligence questions can be answered most thoroughly and at the lowest true total cost through value-added online services, despite the initial "added cost" of entry or subscription to these services.

The study was commissioned by Dow Jones Reuters Business Interactive LLC, Princeton, N.J., and conducted over the summer of 1999 by Bates Information Services, a leading consulting organization to information professionals. It compares searches using three types of online information resources: "free" information services on the Web, fee-based Web sites and value-added Web-based information services.

In the results of the study, recently published as an industry white paper, author Mary Ellen Bates of Bates Information Services concludes that value-added services provide the most productive means to obtaining business-related information online. "The majority of business questions can be most efficiently answered with a professional online service - the available information resources are more comprehensive, provide more depth, and they can be searched in a fraction of the time required to search the Web," concluded Ms. Bates.

"As information professionals attending Online World know all too well, in today's dynamic marketplace every minute counts when trying to stay ahead of the competition," said Anne Caputo, director of Information Professional and Academic Programs for Dow Jones Reuters Business Interactive. "With so many options available on the Web, it can be difficult to locate the best place to quickly find needed information. This study puts those choices into perspective by providing the results of real-world business questions and a detailed look at the features and benefits of online information resources."
