 APRIL SALES INCREASE OF 22.9 PERCENT
 COLUMBUS, Ohio, April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Value City Department Stores, Inc. (NYSE: VCD) today announced total sales for the four weeks ended April 25, 1992, increased 22.9 percent to $52.4 million from the $42.6 million reported for the same period last year. Comparable store sales increased 17.9 percent.
 Sales for the 39 weeks ended April 25, 1992, rose 15.2 percent to $509.9 million from $439.9 million in the year ago period. Comparable store sales were up 9.8 percent for the 39 weeks.
 Jay Schottenstein, Value City Department Stores' Chairman, said, "We continued to be extremely pleased with our sales trends, especially in light of the adverse weather conditions throughout the month." He also noted that the recent month's sales benefited from the shift in the Easter holiday.
 Value City Department Stores, Inc., a full-line, off-price department store chain, operates 56 stores throughout the Midwest and East, vs. 53 stores a year ago.
