 VALUE CITY ANNOUNCES PRELIMINARY RECORD THIRD QUARTER AND MAY SALES
 COLUMBUS, Ohio June 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Value City Department Stores, Inc. (NYSE: VCD) today announced preliminary financial results for its third quarter and nine months ended April 25, 1992.
 Net sales for the third quarter rose 11.3 percent to $143.6 million from $129.0 million last year. Sales on a comparable store basis for the quarter were up 6.6 percent. Net earnings for the quarter increased 24.1 percent to $4.5 million, or $0.15 per share from $3.6 million, or $0.12 per share a year ago.
 Net sales for the nine months ended April 25, 1992 rose 15.2 percent to $506.9 million from $439.9 million last year. Sales on a comparable store basis increased 9.8 percent. Net earnings for this 39 week period increased 21.7 percent to $25.6 million, or $0.83 per share from $21.0 million, or $0.69 per share a year ago.
 Prior year earnings are proforma as if the company was subject to taxes on income and as if the sale of common shares in its initial public offering had occurred at the beginning of that fiscal year.
 The company also announced sales for the four weeks ended May 23, 1992 increased 2.0 percent to $51.2 million versus $50.2 million in the same period last year. Comparable store sales declined 2.3 percent this year against a 24.1 percent comparable store gain in last year's May period.
 The number of shares outstanding is 30,525,000 after giving effect to the 2-for-1 stock split which was effective at the close of business on November 18, 1991.
 Value City, a full-line, off-price department store chain, currently operates 56 stores throughout the Midwest and East.
