VALENTINE'S WEEK FLOWERS: HEARTFELT AND AFFORDABLE

VALENTINE'S WEEK FLOWERS: HEARTFELT AND AFFORDABLE
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Feb. 4 /PRNewswire/ -- Remembering your favorite

Valentines with flowers can be romantic and economical this Feb. 10-15, according to Florists' Transworld Delivery Association (FTD/R/), a leading floral authority.
"We're all watching our budgets these days," says Peggy Doyle, FTD president and co-owner of Lynn Doyle Flowers, Inc., Memphis, Tenn. "But the tradition of giving flowers to a Valentine suits virtually any pocketbook, as the gift can be scaled up or down, from a few flowers or even a single bloom to an elaborate bouquet. It's the thought and the beauty of the flowers that count."
Based on reports from a cross-section of its 25,000 member florists in nine regions of the U.S., FTD estimates that the most popular floral Valentine will be an arrangement of mixed blossoms. This type of arrangement will be priced from approximately $22 to $30, depending on location. Other popular choices include one dozen roses, from $33 to $60, and flowering plants, from $17 to $25.
Red flowers of all types continue to be in high demand. To avoid paying a premium for red flowers, FTD advises budget-conscious Valentines to consider the "less is more" approach. Economical per stem prices make a single blossom especially affordable as a romantic gesture.
Standard red roses, red sweetheart roses and red standard carnations will range from approximately $4 to $5.50, $2.70 to $4, and $1.25 to $2 per stems, respectively. Increased popularity of other floral varieties in non-traditional colors make single stems of yellow, pink and peach flowers appropriate, budget-friendly choices as well.
Floral prices and availability are affected by supply and weather, and can vary by geographic region. Valentine's Day falls just 51 days after Christmas, when red flowers are also in great demand. The price of roses, which have an average growth cycle of 57 days, especially reflects this. The holiday also occurs during the middle of winter, when inclement weather can disrupt flower production and shipping.
The third-largest FTD flowers-by-wire holiday, Valentine's Week ranks just behind Christmas and Mother's Day for floral deliveries. To ensure the best selection, FTD advises all consumers to order their floral Valentine gifts as far in advance as possible.
This year, FTD florists offer two special bouquets with Valentine motifs. The FTD Flower Basket Bouquet features a heart design on a charming, hand-painted basket containing red and white fresh cut flowers. The elegant FTD Hearts & Flowers(R) Bouquet displays an exotic cymbidium orchid and contemporary greenery in a heart-shaped crystal keepsake bowl.
FTD florists can help consumers tailor an expressive floral Valentine to any budget. More than 25,000 FTD florists nationwide make it as easy as FTD for quality floral gifts to be sent virtually anywhere in the world.
