VAC SHIPMENTS APPROACH RECORD IN MARCH.

Manufacturers' domestic shipments of full-sized vacuum cleaners rebounded in March, up 6.8 percent. At 2,467,554 units, it was the second-largest total since the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers began counting more than two years ago, and larger than any number the defunct Vacuum Cleaner Manufacturers Association reported.

For the year to date, uprights, canisters and stick vacs increased 5.7 percent to 6,446,301 units. Following a record year in 2004, January rose 10.6 percent to 2,003,054, but February slipped 0.2 percent to 1,975,693.

AHAM's standard is 2,581,530 back in November. Past March totals were 2,310,814 in 2004 and 2,277,727 a year earlier.
