Ute Lember meets Marlene Dietrich.

Well known performer Ute Lemper is coming to Cyprus for third time on Sunday building on the success of her performances at the Kypria International Festival 2008 and as part of events within Pafos2017.

At Rialto Theatre, Lemper will present her new show titled Rendezvous with Marlene, which is based on a phone call and exchange between Marlene and Lemper in 1988 in Paris. After receiving the French Moliere Award for her performance in Cabaret in Paris, Ute sent a postcard to Marlene, essentially apologising for all the media attention comparing her to Marlene Dietrich.

Ute was just at the beginning of her career in theatre and music, whereas Marlene looked back on a long, fulfilled life of movies, music, incredible collaborations, love stories and stardom.

In an interview with Matthew Wexler, for the The Broadway Blog, Lemper commented on her relationship with Dietrich: "For 30 years I have been compared to her and always felt embarrassed to be compared to this legend but was honoured at the same time.

"Now I feel it is time to crawl into her story and give it life with my voice and my heart. I am not imitating her, rather letting her speak through me with a blend of her and my soul together," she added.

For the younger audience, perhaps unaware of Dietrich's legacy, Lemper describes her as an amalgamation of Cate Blanchett's and Nicole Kidman's elegance with a drop of Adele's broken voice.

The internationally acclaimed artist was born in Germany and studied dance and theatre in Cologne and Vienna. She has made her mark on the stage, in films, in concert and as a unique recording artist on more than 30 albums over an esteemed 30-year career.

She has been universally praised for her interpretations of Berlin cabaret songs, the works of Kurt Weill and Berthold Brecht and the Chansons of Marlene Dietrich, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Leo Ferre, Jacques Prevert, Nino Rota, Astor Piazzolla, her own compositions, as well as her portrayals in musicals and plays on Broadway, in Paris, Berlin and in London's West End.
