Upgrading quality, standards of Philippine Statistics.
The 26th National Statistics Month (NSM) is observed this October, with the theme "Pagyamanin at Gamitin and Estadistika, Kalusugan para sa Lahat ay Abot-Kamay Na," focusing on government's thrust on universal health care and recognizing the efforts of official statisticians and technical personnel involved in the generation of health, wellness, and nutrition statistics.
The 2015 NSM, led by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), coincides with the global celebration of the 2nd World Statistics Day on October 20 with the theme, "Better data. Better Lives." PSA is headed by National Statistician and Civil Registrar General Dr. Lisa Grace S. Bernales. Created by Republic Act 10625 on December 29, 2013, it was the result of the merger of the National Statistics Office, the National Statistical Coordination Board, the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics, and the Bureau of Labor and Employment Statistics, into a single statistical body.
NSM is observed in October to promote, enhance, and instill nationwide awareness and appreciation of the importance of statistics to various sectors of society and elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of Philippine statistics.
The Department of Health opened the month-long 2015 NSM on October 1, while the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) will host the NSM closing ceremonies, after the 17th BSP-Department of Education oratorical contest on October 28, 2015.
Programs feature an exhibit of Official Statistics in the Philippines, a statistics fair, audio-visual presentation on the milestones of the Philippine Statistical System (PSS), symposiums, a photography contest, and a statistics quiz. The NSM Awards, instituted since 2002, will recognize the Best Statistical Activity conducted by a government organization, the Best Statistical Activity conducted by a private profit or non-profit organization, the Best Region in Advocacy for Statistics, and the Best Youth Advocate for Statistics.
Preparations for the 13th National Convention on Statistics (NCS) in October, 2016, starts this year. The NCS is a triennial event, which gathers statisticians and professionals in related fields from government, academe, and the private sector to exchange ideas and discuss recent statistical challenges and developments in the PSS. The NSM and the NCS are key advocacy initiatives of the PSS to communicate official statistics to the general public.
Statistics and data generated by the PSPA include latest figures on population and demography; health and vital statistics; education and employment; social welfare; crime and delinquency, as well as data on various sectors of the Philippine economy such as income prices; manufacturing foreign trade; public finance; banking and insurance; energy; and mines and minerals. The statistics and data are used by researchers, writers, development planners, decision and policy makers, as well as tourists and visitors.
