Update: UMASS recognizes RA union: undergrads will join labor force. (Update).

University of Massachusetts Amherst is making history--again. In March, the school's resident assistants became the first undergraduates to unionize. In July, school officials announced that they would negotiate a labor contract with the RAs, making UMASS Amherst the first college in the nation to agree to do so.

Under the terms of the agreement, the university and United Auto Workers local 2322 will begin negotiations this fall. Topics on the table will include the terms and conditions of employment of the RAs, but will exclude all academic and student matters.--NR
