Update: American man allegedly pushes wife off 4th-floor staircase at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport.

Update: Police announced that both people involved were Asian Americans over 30 years of age. Police believe that the incident occurred when a Taiwanese-American woman surnamed Chang tried to stop her Chinese-American husband Wan from going abroad, reported Apple Daily.

After a quarrel broke out between the couple, Wan allegedly put Chang in a bear hug and hurled her off the stair landing. After Chang fell, Wan soon jumped off the landing as well.

Chang was seriously injured, including multiple fractures and is in a coma. Wan suffered a collapsed lung and is also in a coma.

However, doctors said they believe that their injuries are not life-threatening. Police will wait until their conditions stabilize before questioning them.

TAIPEI (Taiwan News) -- A man and a woman fell off the fourth-floor staircase onto a second-floor escalator in the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport early this morning, with the woman suffering serious injuries, according to a witness on Breaking News Commune.

At 12:04 a.m. this morning in Terminal 2 of the Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport, a man and a woman fell off the stair landing on the fourth floor to the second-floor escalator below. Both people sustained serious head trauma and bodily injuries from the impact and bloodstains were spotted on the scene.

An eyewitness on the scene, who posted their account on Breaking News Commune, heard a woman shout loudly twice, followed by a large crashing sound from someone falling. The witness then saw the woman sprawled on the ground.

Approximately 30 seconds later, the man also fell off the stairs and landed on the railing of the escalator one floor below, before landing heavily on top of the injured woman. The witness speculated that the man had intentionally pushed the woman during a lover's quarrel and then attempted to commit suicide.

After receiving a report of the incident, aviation police rushed to the scene, where they saw a man and woman with severe injuries. They immediately rushed both to the hospital and sealed off the area.

Police said they have started to review surveillance footage and will report their findings to the public. According to an initial investigation, police say that the two fell from a landing on the staircase and landed on the escalators below which lead to the exit and entry halls.

Police say the exact cause of the incident is under investigation.
