International Environmental Conference and Exhibit

TAPPI, along with the Pulp and Paper Technical Association of Canada (PAPTAC), National Council for Air and Stream Improvement (NCASI), and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Forest Service present the International Environmental Conference and Exhibit. This four-day event will focus on the most pressing environmental issues affecting the pulp, paper, converting, and wood products industries. Working with the theme "Environmental Excellence for Competitive Positioning," this conference will provide environmental professionals a unique learning experience through a combination of workshops, tutorials, and over 50 technical sessions that will provide the most up-to-date information for the environmental community and its workforce.

Practical Aspects of Pressing and Drying Short Course

Course Overview. The TAPPI Practical Aspects of Pressing and Drying Short Course is an intermediate level course that allows those with little or partial knowledge of pressing, sheet consolidation, and drying to understand the basic theory of the processes, recognize equipment and how it works, and learn how to achieve safe operations at efficient levels while producing a quality product. Attendees will also learn troubleshooting skills that can help reduce pressing and drying operating cost, improve operating efficiency, and improve sheet quality. Instructors will cover a variety of topics related to pressing and drying, including a design review of both the press section and the dryer section, press and dryer felt design and cleaning methods, steam showers, cleaning fabrics, sheet consolidation, air systems, infrared drying, roll covers and more.

Hands-on Workshop for Pulp and Paper Basics

March 11-15, 2002, North Carolina State University

Course Overview. North Carolina State University and TAPPI will present the Hands-on Workshop for Pulp and Paper Basics March 11-15, 2002, June 3-7, 2002 and October 14-18, 2002. This unique workshop will provide attendees an overall view of the basic concepts in pulp and paper manufacturing. Attendees will increase their understanding by participating in hands-on laboratory exercises.

This hands-on laboratory based workshop will provide a broad overview of pulping, bleaching, chemical recovery, recycling, papermaking and converting. The 5-day course will consist of presentations in the morning and hands-on laboratory and pilot plant exercises in the afternoon. Workshop material discussed in the morning will be re-emphasized in lab and pilot plant exercises covering pulping, bleaching, deinking, and refining for increased understanding and retention. TAPPI's Bleach Plant Operations Short Course teaches participants the fundamentals of bleach plant operations, the various bleaching sequences, the effects of bleaching on pulp quality and strength and on costs and the environment, thus increasing their ability to troubleshoot problems, decrease costs, increase environmental protection, and optimize production.

Advanced Printing on Corrugated Board Short Course

March 20-22, 2002, Dallas, TX Course Overview.

The topics of color theory and color instrumentation will be covered, as well as a demonstration of densitometers, and how to read and use values such as trapping efficiency, dot grain, and hue error. The group will also learn, through demonstration, the latest in fingerprinting techniques, as well as the proper evaluation techniques.
