Up the ladder to the plant shelf.

A rolling stockroom ladder has a functional place in this remodeled house in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Portland architect James Oliver placed one on a second-floor landing so owners Ann and Peter Elsenbach can reach an elevated plant shelf. The solid oak ladder is designed to store flat against the wall, swing out for use, and roll on rubber wheels.

Such ladders can be mail-ordered through some hardware supply companies. This one cost about $265 (plus $32 for mounting brackets and 10-foot-long steel track); others come up to 12-1/2 feet long.
