Unocal Senior Researcher Robert L. Russell Joins ORYXE Energy as Director of Fuels Research and Development.
As Director of Fuels Research and Development, Russell is responsible for overseeing the emissions testing of ORYXE Energy's proprietary fuel additives. He will manage the design and execution of experiments, as well as the analysis and reporting of results obtained.
ORYXE Energy develops and markets proprietary fuel additives for diesel, gasoline and heavy distillates to enable these fuels to burn cleaner and reduce toxic emissions. ORYXE Energy's first product-to-market, OR-LED, is the first and only additive to be approved by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) for use in alternative plans to meet Texas Low Emission Diesel requirements that go into effect Oct. 1, 2005.
Russell has more than 22 years of experience in research and development. Throughout his career, Russell has specialized in developing reformulations of several products to meet environmental regulations while improving product profitability. Russell has been a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of California, Irvine and Brookhaven National Lab, Brookhaven, Long Island, New York.
Prior to joining ORYXE Energy, Russell served as a Senior Research Associate in the Fuels Research Department of Unocal 76, where he worked on environmental issues affecting company products as well as on many technical service assignments involving product quality and product specifications. When an environmental regulation required the industry to reformulate diesel fuel, Russell developed and patented the most cost-effective reformulation in the industry. This patented formula's worth is estimated to have earned $24 million per year for Unocal.

Russell has received recognition for his extraordinary accomplishments, including the Citation for Service by the American Petroleum Institute, Committee on Petroleum Measurement and the Award of Appreciation for Years of Outstanding Service from American Society of Testing and Materials. He is a member of the American Society of Testing and Materials (ASTM) and a former member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and the Air and Waste Management Association.

Russell, who earned his Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of California, Irvine, studying under Nobel Laureate F.S. Rowland, joins ORYXE Energy at a key point in the company's development. ORYXE Energy recently signed an agreement with Afton Chemical Corporation, a leading manufacturer of petroleum additives, to construct a manufacturing facility in Pasadena, Texas. The new facility, scheduled to open in September, will produce ORYXE Energy's OR-LED additive for distribution in Texas.
OR-LED's approval by the TCEQ followed a rigorous engine testing protocol performed at the West Virginia University National Research Center for Alternative Fuels, Engines, and Emissions laboratory, recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency and certified by the California Air Resources Board. The tests were conducted under strict federal testing guidelines and procedures.
The tests showed that OR-LED demonstrated a greater than 5.7 percent reduction in Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx), greater than 20 percent reduction in Total Hydrocarbons (THC), the main contributors to smog formation, and approximately 10 percent reduction in Carbon Monoxide (CO), a poisonous gas, all major concerns for Texas air quality stewards. Widespread use of OR-LED in diesel fuel would result in reducing up to 6,000 tons of NOx annually.
