University of Oregon Creates New Position to Oversee Athletics Depart. Business Operations.

Byline: Maury Brown

Lorraine Davis, interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics for the University of Oregon, has appointed Jamie Moffitt to the newly created role of Executive Senior Associate Athletic Director for Finance and Administration for the department. Moffitt will direct all aspects of the athletics department's business operations.

While the creation of the position does not specify as such, it is possible that its creation is a by-product of the golden parachute handshake clause that former AD Mike Bellotti had when leaving for a broadcast position with ESPN.

"A key element of Jamie's role will be assessing the department's ongoing needs," Davis said. "Jamie and her team of financial and human resource professionals will ensure that the organizational structure, staffing, and financial resources are in place to achieve department priorities."

Moffitt is currently the associate dean for finance and operations at the University of Oregon School of Law, where she has served since 2003. During her time at the law school, she reorganized the school's financial structure, implemented new annual budgeting processes, designed new financial reporting practices, and improved the school's human resource and contracting processes to conform to campus best practices. Prior to joining the university, Moffitt held private sector leadership positions as a senior executive at a venture-backed technology company in Boston and as a consultant with McKinsey & Company, a global management consulting firm.

Moffitt's appointment to the new position in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics will begin May 1, 2010.

Davis said she sought creation of this new role as a means of attending to ongoing issues and long-term goals within the department. "The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics has experienced a period of rapid growth and success. This new position will help the department to develop and implement the necessary budgeting, financial, human resource, and contractual practices to support this expansion," she said.

"I am grateful to Jamie for her willingness to accept this vitally important position. Her experience in finance and operations at the school of law, combined with her personal background in athletics, make her the ideal person to fill this new role," Davis continued.

As an undergraduate at Harvard University, Moffitt served from 1989 to 1991 as captain of the women's tennis team. She also competed for a year on the Women's Professional Tennis Circuit.

Moffitt received her Bachelor of Arts degree (economics) from Harvard, her Master of Arts in Law and Diplomacy degree (international business) from The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and her Juris Doctor degree from Harvard Law School. She currently teaches classes in accounting and negotiation.
