University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences: large employer.

As one of the state's largest public employers with 9,400 employees, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences has a very large family. In fact, UAMS has employees in nearly every county of the state and, along with its affiliates, has an economic impact in Arkansas of more than $4.5 billion a year.

UAMS has several programs in place to ensure the personal health and professional happiness of its employees. Proper fitness and nutrition guidance are offered through Get Healthy UAMS. The Leadership UAMS program provides professional enhancement, and positive job performances are acknowledged through the Employee Recognition program. In addition, UAMS employees have access to various physical and mental health services. Every year the campus celebrates various professions during Nurses Week, Respiratory Care Week, Allied Health Professions Week, National Pharmacists Week and more.

As part of UAMS' mission--to teach, to heal, to search, to serve--the system encourages and supports its employees to become actively involved both inside and outside their work environment, touching lives beyond those in their immediate circle of friends, family and colleagues. Together UAMS employees have supported such organizations as the American Heart Association, National Converence for Community and Justice, March of Dimes, American Red Cross, United Way and Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure. In 2003, Team UAMS was the recipient of the Race for the Cure Largest Team Award, with more than 1,400 participants. This is a testament to the generous nature of UAMS employees.
