University alcohol education programs recognized by Coors.

As part of its ongoing commitment to alcohol education on college campuses, Coors Brewing Co. took part in presenting the 1991 National Collegiate Alcohol Awareness Week (NCAAW) awards at the National Association for Campus Activities Conference in Dallas February 19.

The annual awards program recognizes colleges and universities with the top alcohol education programs and is sponsored by the Inter-association Task Force on Alcohol and Other Substance Abuse Issues, which represents student affairs professionals across the country.

Coors was instrumental in establishing the program five years ago and has continued its support of NCAAW to increase awareness of alcohol-related issues on college campuses.

From 165 entries, six institutions were selected to receive a $1,000 grant each for their general scholarship fund. The schools were judged on the variety and creativity of activities, level of participation, program and evaluation and whether the activities resulted in a year-round program.

This year's winners were Bowling Green University; Lord Fairfax College, in Middletown, VA; Towson State University; University of Alaska-Fairbanks; University of Missouri-Columbia; and the University of Mississippi.

"We believe that collaborative efforts between students and administration, with support from businesses and the community, are going to make the difference and really address alcohol and drug abuse on our nation's college campuses," explained Dr. Edward Hammond, national chairperson of NCAAW. "From the start, Coors Brewing Company has been involved in this partnership and in helping us work toward solutions."

"Our support of NCAAW and this awards program is part of a continuing commitment to prevent alcohol abuse on college campuses," said Judy Hayes, Coors' alcohol projects manager, "and we are pleased to have an opportunity to recognize the efforts of these institutions."
