Universities receive grants to fight alcohol abuse.

The National Collegiate Athletic Association Foundation is helping college students nationwide fight alcohol abuse through the "Choices" grant program, underwritten by a $2.5-million gift from Anheuser-Busch Cos., Inc.

To date, the grant program has awarded more than $175,000 to 12 universities. The second round of awards will come this month.

"The programs we fund through |Choices' help remind students about two important lessons regarding alcohol beverages--personal responsibility and respect for the law," said Richard Schultz, NCAA director.

"Anheuser-Busch's generous contribution has made this program a reality, and is one major way in which corporate America is getting involved on the college campus--greatly enhancing our efforts to educate the whole person, academically, socially and personally," Schultz added.

"These schools are implementing programs that appeal to students, encouraging responsibility rather than lecturing about it," noted Robert Khayat, foundation president, "and that involve the students in the educational process."
