What works for special-needs learners

This volume brings together a group of education scholars and researchers from the US who show educators how to apply the principles of Universal Design for Learning (UDL) in all subject areas and grade levels. They introduce UDL and questions about how it relates to technology, its difference from universal design, how it applies to the curriculum, and other areas, then offer guidelines to help teachers plan and structure curricula, including goals, assessments, methods, and materials. They then focus on specific skills, content, and subject matter: reading comprehension strategy instruction and digital learning environments; writing instruction and online supported writing environments based on UDL principles; and science, math, history, and the arts, including painting and dance. They describe applications to low or no-technology settings and what the new national emphasis on UDL means for teaching preparation and professional development. Hall et al., a research scientist, psychologist, and developmental neuropsychologist and educator, are associated with a non-profit research and development organization that aims to improve education for all learners through technology and research in the cognitive neurosciences.
