Universal Studios Hollywood's 'Discover A Star Foundation' Surpasses $3.5 Million Milestone in Fundraising for Children's Health Issues and Services for the Homeless.

UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif., Sept. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Universal Studios Hollywood's Discover A Star Foundation raised almost $440,000 in its recent fundraising drive and has reached a major new milestone in its philanthropic efforts, with cumulative contributions now exceeding $3.5 million, it was announced by Larry Kurzweil, President and COO, Universal Studios Hollywood.

The Discover A Star Foundation allocates the funds to a variety of programs and initiatives targeted toward children's health issues and services for the homeless.

In announcing the achievement, Larry Kurzweil said: "Universal Studios Hollywood has a long-standing commitment to making a difference in our community. The Discover A Star Foundation, funded by contributions from our employees and partners, is one way in which we accomplish that goal. We're proud that the generosity of our employees and our associates has enabled us to arrive at this new level of funding."

In providing funding and assistance, the Discover A Star Foundation seeks to maximize the impact of its grants through both the creative use of financial assistance and the leveraging of talent and manpower and supplied by Universal Studios Hollywood employees. For the "Chase Place" facility at Children's Hospital in Los Angeles, Discover A Star provided funding to underwrite a lounge for cancer patients that were designed by Universal Studios Hollywood's creative team. For Habitat For Humanity's Operation Home Delivery, Universal Studios Hollywood employees utilized Discover A Star funding -- and employee labor -- to build two homes on the Universal property for delivery to victims of Hurricane Katrina. For the past 15 years, Universal Studios Hollywood employees have hosted a "Christmas in Spring" event at L.A. Family Housing's North Hollywood residential facility, with employees providing entertainment and catering; the Discover A Star Foundation has additionally provided L.A. Family Housing with a grant to help fund permanent housing for agency clients.

In all, Universal's Discover A Star Foundation has provided assistance to over 40 non-profit organizations including Ability First, Ahead With Horses, Alexandria House, Aviva Family Center, Beyond Shelter, Burbank Center for the Retarded, Caring for Children and Families with AIDS, Chase Foundation, Child and Family Guidance, Childrens' Burn Foundation, Chrysalis, Concern Foundation, Covenant House, Creative Planet School for the Arts, Desi Geestman Foundation, Friends of Child Advocates, Homeboy Industries, House of Ruth, It's Time for Kids, Jeffrey Foundation, Jeff Griffith Youth Center, Jewish Family Services, L.A. Family Housing, Lamp Community, MEND, My Friend's Place, New Directions for Youth, Operation School Bell, Providence St. Joseph Foundation, St. Joseph Center, Students Run L.A., The Greater West Hollywood Food Coalition, The Heart Touch Project, The Help Group, The Peacock Foundation, Upward Bound House, Valley Family Center and Women's Care Cottage.
