United to provide day of Christmas cheer; Festive meal for 140 guests.
CHRISTMAS DINNER: guests and, below, CHARITABLE Christians and Muslims brought festive cheer to the needy on Christmas Day Members of Paddock Community Church and Huddersfield Ahmadiyya Mosque, Lower Fitzwilliam Street, united to put on a Christmas lunch and entertainment.
And they did it for people who would have otherwise been spending Christmas Day alone.
Their efforts meant that nearly 140 guests tucked into a three-course festive meal at the Jubilee Centre, Paddock.
About 30 church volunteers drove guests to the Jubilee Centre, cooked, served and waited on tables while members of the Ahmadiyya Mosque worked as waiters and helped fill takeaway boxes with food for guests to take home.
Visitors, including elderly and homeless people, were treated to a Christmas carols recital by cornet player Lindsay Taylor, from Huddersfield Salvation Army.
After the festive lunch, guests enjoyed a Nativity play and carols from young members of the church.
The event, which took place at the Jubilee Centre for the second year, had previously been organised by Huddersfield Salvation Army at New Hey Road, Oakes.
The Muslim group have also previously manned "soup kitchens" in the town centre at Christmas.
Charlene Novak, principal organiser of the lunch, said: "I was worried that a lot of people would be on their own this Christmas.
"As Christians we're meant to spend time loving people and I love doing this.
"The guests all had a fabulous time and we've taken lots of photos of people enjoying themselves.
"You get every variety of person coming and they would be having a miserable time if there wasn't something like this to go to.
"There are so many volunteers I want to thank. There are so many people who've given up their time basically to show love to people.
"We may have the event here next year. We'll see how the next year goes".
Nadeem Uddin, of the Ahmadiyya mosque, said they had been delighted to join in and help.
