United States : WASHINGTON: BAE SYSTEMS wins US Air Force Contract for Minuteman III worth $51m.

BAE Systems has been successful to secure a U.S. Air Force contract modification to deliver support services for the Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile weapon system worth $51 million.

The company has used an option on a contract granted earlier for the fixed-price, level of work modification.

As part of the newly secured contract, BAE will be responsible for delivering systems engineering, technical assistance as well as support, plus training and development to do integration, sustaining engineering and program management support operations for the system.

It is anticipated that work, which will be carried out in Utah, will be accomplished by next July.

The Air Force Nuclear Weapons Center is the contracting activity.

The Minuteman, an intercontinental ballistic missile system, is dispersed through hardened silos to defend attacks and is connected to an underground launch control center, manned by two officers who provide alert in the launch control center 24/7.

The United States deployed Minuteman I in the early 1960s, while the existing set of 450 Minuteman III missiles are positioned at a number of nationwide bases of the US Air Force.
