"What it means is that we'll get to know where there's a faulty component and we can send someone to fix it before any interruption occurs," he said.
"So it will reduce the number of unplanned interruptions. It will improve reliability. So it's good for our customers and good for us."
Mr Hely says thousands of powerlines will be used across the region. "We're trialing up in Tweed Heads on 11,000 volts powerlines," he said. "We're trialing it also around Yamba on another powerline.
"Probably the longest one that we're doing is from Casino to Urbenville, which goes through a lot of rural areas that are subject to environmental conditions and wildlife."
