United States : MKAA awards $2.3 million reconstruction contract to Michael Baker Jr. Inc.
Metropolitan Knoxville Airport Authority (MKAA) has awarded $2.3 million contract to Michael Baker Jr. Inc., for the design services for its Runway Reconstruction Program at McGhee Tyson Airport in Knoxville.
The Program includes several projects focused on the total reconstruction of Runway 5L-23R. During 2-4 year period, the company will be responsible for design, bidding, and program management services. Throughout the contract period, Baker and its team members will help MKAA in continuing airfield operations even as Runway 5L-23R is closed for reconstruction. The project covers the deployment of a provisional instrument landing system (ILS) for the parallel Runway 5R-23L, widespread earthwork operations to boost drainage and set up of a new glideslope area, and taxiway system upgrades such as new pavements and destruction of outdated pavements.
Jeff Pike, Operations Manager in Baker's Knoxville office, said, "The contract award will require close coordination with multiple stakeholders including several airlines, maintenance operations, military (TN Air National Guard), air cargo tenants, and FAA personnel both locally and at the Airports District Office (ADO)."
