United States : LG sidewalks get a facelift.

Sidewalks in downtown Locust Grove are getting a face lift. The improvements are part of the Oklahoma Department of Transportation Pedestrian Improvement Project under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009.

The $636,000 project will improve pedestrian walkways in Locust Grove along U.S. Highway 412A from Broadway east to Cherokee Street. Work began this week and is not related to a sidewalk project the town has been working on for later this fall.

The town heard about the grant but has had no say in the improvements or timing of the construction.

Along with the sidewalk improvements, the grant has added some large planters for the beatification of the town. Bates said some business owners are upset about the improvements and beautification because it will cause a loss of parking in front of their businesses.

Bates also said he hopes by this fall, the town will have its own sidewalk project under construction. The board is working to get sidewalks from the north side of U.S. Highway 412A from Delaware to the Library.

Right now the board is focused on getting an estimate for the project was well as specs from the engineer.
