United States : James H. DeGraffenreidt, Jr. Receives AGA s Distinguished Service Award.
The American Gas Association (AGA) is proud to announce that the 2015 Distinguished Service Award is being given to James H. DeGraffenreidt, Jr., former Chairman and CEO of WGL Holdings, Inc.
Throughout his career, James has been a thoughtful, eloquent spokesperson and champion for the natural gas industry, the energy utility sector and the American Gas Association, said AGA President and CEO Dave McCurdy. His leadership on the 2006 Pipeline Safety Act was instrumental in continuing the culture of safety that is essential for the ongoing safe and reliable delivery of natural gas throughout the United States. James work with federal and state regulators focusing on innovative natural gas rate design and non-volumetric, decoupled rates played a significant role in the success of the natural gas distribution sector today. We offer our heartfelt congratulations to him, his wife Mychelle, their children Aaron, Lorraine, Michael and Jeremy, and daughter-in-law, Brenda on this tremendous honor.
Mr. DeGraffenreidt, Jr. began his career practicing law specializing in telecommunications, utilities, and public finance. He joined Washington Gas in 1986 as the Senior Managing Attorney. Five years later he became Vice President of Rates and Regulatory Affairs, and, in 1994, he was elected President and Chief Operating Officer for Washington Gas.
He rose to the position of CEO in 1998 and then Chairman and CEO of both WGL Holdings and Washington Gas Light Company in 2001 the position he held until his retirement from WGL in October 2009. DeGraffenreidt, Jr. served as Chairman of the AGA Board of Directors in 2007.
Mr. DeGraffenreidt, Jr. has remained committed to industry leadership as well as community service. He currently serves on the boards of Vectren, Harbor Bankshares, the Maryland State Board of Education, Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company and the Walters Art Museum. He received the degrees of Juris Doctor and Master of Business Administration from Columbia University in 1978 and a Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale College in 1974.
