United States : IEEE Invites Global Stakeholders to Participate in Creating Standardized Consumer Rating System for Mobile Device Image Quality.

IEEE, the world's largest professional organization dedicated to advancing technology for humanity, today announced that stakeholders globally are invited to participate in an open, industry-wide effort to develop and deliver a standardized, metrics-based rating system for mobile device image quality. The IEEE Camera Phone Image Quality (CPIQ) Conformity Assessment Steering Committee is engaging carriers, mobile-device camera designers and manufacturers in creating a rating system that is easily understandable for consumers.

Mobile devices with identical camera pixel count (megapixel) produce varying image quality, which may cause dissatisfaction and confusion for consumers. IEEE P1858 , IEEE Draft Standard for Camera Phone Image Quality (CPIQ), is being developed to propose standardized methods and metrics for measuring and testing mobile device image quality. The IEEE CPIQ Conformity Assessment Steering Committee is being formed to create an industry-supported consumer rating system based on the forthcoming IEEE P1858 standard, which is intended to address the fundamental characteristics that contribute to image quality.

Establishment of the steering committee is another important step in the development of a standardized approach to testing and certifying smartphone cameras. This standardized approach will provide great value to players throughout the camera phone supply chain, as well as consumers, said Leland Yu, vice chair of the IEEE P1858 working group and member of technical staff with AT&T.

Added Konstantinos Karachalios, managing director, IEEE Standards Association (IEEE-SA): There is a need in the marketplace for a clear, concise and comprehensive definition of image quality that consumers of current and future mobile imaging devices worldwide could use in comparing products. We envision a rating system that would eliminate ambiguity about the image quality to expect from a given device and help consumers make better-educated buying decisions for their specific needs. In these ways, these efforts bring clarity to the marketplace and ultimately fuel innovation of higher-quality devices and overall market growth.

The steering committee s roles could include leading development of a device-certification and laboratory-qualification program, defining how a test laboratory can achieve accreditation to grant a CPIQ rating and/or hosting a product certification registry. A future version of the standard and certification program will include a rating system for video quality.
