United States : FIRSTENERGY closedowns Unit 2 at Beaver Valley Power Station for maintenance work.
The company has not mentioned that when the Unit will resume. In every 18 months the refueling process takes place.
As per the upgradation process, 65 of the 157 fuel assemblies will be replaced. Crews will also execute safety inspections of the unit s reactor vessel head, electrical generator and turbines, while preventive maintenance will be carried out on the entire unit s major parts, as well as valves, pumps and cooling tower.
The company noted that Unit 2 s two low-pressure turbines will also get an upgrade, in the form of new high-efficiency blades.
FirstEnergy spokeswoman Jennifer Young said, In addition, a number of valves, actuators and other components on the turbines will also be replaced, so essentially all the low-pressure turbine components will be new.
It is estimated that the turbine project would cost up to $14.8 million. Unit 1 generates around 911 megawatts of electricity, whereas Unit 2 produces up to 904 megawatts and over the shutdown of Unit 2, Unit 1 will operate at 100% power.
Throughout the outage, upwards of 1,000 temporary contractors, FENCO and FirstEnergy employees will supplement the Beaver County Power Station s work force.
Young said, The outage will have no effect on availability of power to customers.
