United States : FEMA Selects Hsin Ya Huang for the 2019-2020 Youth Preparedness Council.
FEMA welcomes Hsin Ya (Jessie) Huang from Eugene, Oregon as one of the 15 national selectees for the 2019-2020 Youth Preparedness Council (YPC). FEMA created the YPC in 2012 to bring together young leaders who are interested in supporting disaster preparedness and making a difference in their communities by completing disaster preparedness projects nationally and locally. The 15 council members are attending the Youth Preparedness Council Summit in Washington, D.C., from July 16-17, to meet with FEMA leaders and other youth preparedness affirmers to prepare for the year ahead.
Hsin Ya (Jessie) is the Red Cross Club President in her school. She expanded this club from 4 to over 30 active members within a year. She also organized a Home Fire Campaign event series to install home fire alarms and train homeowners about hazards. In addition, she serves on the American Red Cross First Aid Service Team.
Hsin Ya (Jessie) has already made some fantastic contributions to her school and community. I look forward to seeing what she does next as a new YPC member, said FEMA Region 10 Administrator Mike OHare.
During her time on the council, Hsin Ya (Jessie) would like to supply classrooms across the United States with disaster kits. She was inspired to pursue this goal after witnessing the devastating impact of disasters in her birth country of Taiwan. She also plans to operate emergency preparedness awareness booths at community events like football games and marathons.
