United States : DYNEGY set to stop operating three uneconomical coal-fired units in ILLINOIS.

Dynegy has announced its strategy to close down three coal-fired units involving two power generating facilities at Illinois in the US over unviable economic factors.

The company has planned to close down the coal-fueled units as these units have been unsuccessful to retrieve their basic operating costs at the recently held capacity auction of the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO).

Dynegy has decided to stop operations of the Units 1 & 3 at the Baldwin power plant, plus Unit 2 at the Newton power station.

The company aims to shut down generating capacity of about 1,835MW at the coal-fueled units of the two power stations.

Strategies to close down an additional generating capacity of 500MW are also on the agenda, and the final decision on this issue is likely in late 2016.

Illinois has witnessed suspension of about 2,800MW of generation capacity, comprising the Southern Illinois capacity of 30%.

In early 2016, the company declared its strategy to close down the operations of the 465MW Wood River power plant in June.

The CEO of Dynegy Robert Flexon disclosed, "This is a difficult decision, and we don't take it lightly. For 40 years, the employees of the Baldwin and Newton Power Stations have generated reliable and affordable power for the people of Illinois.

"The men and women of these stations, just like the Wood River employees, have proudly and professionally served and safely operated these facilities for decades while contributing greatly to their communities."

The Newton and Baldwin facilities have normally provided supports to about 4,000 direct and indirect jobs, with annual economic operations worth $1bn for the region, according to the 2014 economic impact study by Development Strategies.
