United States : Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales applauds voters decision to maintain Citys good governance and welcomes call to move forward with firefighters.
Councilwoman Shirley Gonzales issued the following statement regarding Tuesday's Charter Amendment election:
I want to thank San Antonio voters for sending a clear message on Tuesday. The hard-won fight waged by generations of San Antonians to achieve equal representation should be respected.
Proposition A would have erased decades of work for single-member districts in San Antonio, would have placed power in the hands of special interests and possibly mired City Hall in trivial elections.
District 5, especially, has been moving forward, seeding ground for needed growth and development, and erasing decades of neglect. Proposition A was a threat to that momentum and voters saw it as a threat to the Citys overall positive growth.
We need a clear-eyed focus to continue the work at hand. There is still much work to be done.
The vote on propositions B and C sent a clear message as well. Voter concerns will be at the top of our priorities list as we work to build a better San Antonio with the best City staff leadership and with a continued honest desire to resolve the impasse with our firefighters.
The City stands ready, as it has from the beginning, to meet with the firefighters union in order to iron out a contract the benefits all of San Antonio.
