United States : COUNCIL approves the WESTAR project.

With a 4-1 vote, the Goleta City Council has finally approved Westar Associate's planned mixed-use housing and commercial project on Hollister Avenue, clearing the way for the development to proceed through Design Review Board and permitting processes.

Westar's plan has been a hot button issue for many of the town's people, who have voiced their misery due to increased traffic, obstruction of the 'view corridor' to the Santa Ynez mountains, and the loss of 'small town feel,' among other problems. But still, members of the Westar team view their project as a milestone project in green building and sustainable design through combining residential communities with commercial space.

The project site, exists at 7000 Hollister Avenue across from the Camino Real Marketplace, and is designated as an area for 'medium density residential housing' in Goleta's Master Plan.

Westar's project currently intends to provide 279 residential apartment units on hire, alongside close to 90,000 square feet of retail space.

The plan had returned to the drawing board several times since Westar Associates first acquired the property in 2008, bouncing around in several Design Review Board and Planning Commission hearings.
