United States : Border Patrol Arrests Three During Failed Human Smuggling Attempt Near Champlain, NY.

U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Champlain, N.Y., Border Patrol Station arrested a naturalized U.S. citizen and two illegal aliens on human smuggling charges last Wednesday.

According to court records, the U.S. Attorneys Office for the Northern District of New York charged the following subjects.

Nikolay Souslov, 64, of Russia, with alien smuggling 8USC1324 ;

Teona Janashvili, 34, of Tbilisi, Georgia, with entry without inspection 8USC1325 ; and

Nadezhda Papova, 68, a naturalized U.S. citizen born in Russia and living in West Orange, N.J., with alien smuggling 8USC1324 .

Souslov and Papova face a maximum of five years imprisonment and a $250,000 fine. Janashvili faces a maximum of six months imprisonment and a $5,000 fine. All three have been remanded into custody.

Shortly after midnight Wednesday, October 19, Swanton Border Patrol Sector Tactical Communications Center received a report of possible cross-border illegal activity and dispatched Border Patrol agents from Swanton Sector and Champlain Station to investigate.

A short time later, Border Patrol agents stopped a man and woman walking across a field. Agents determined that they were the subjects of the report and arrested them at about 2:30 a.m.

Nearby, additional Border Patrol agents stopped a vehicle with New Jersey license plates. Agents determined that the driver, Papova, was there to pick up Souslov and Janashvili, and arrested Papova.

All three were taken to Champlain Border Patrol Station where agents biometrically confirmed their identities.

Criminal charges are merely allegations. Defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty in a court of law.

These arrests illustrate the quick response of Border Patrol agents to disrupt human smuggling and other nefarious activity along our nations northern border, said Norman Lague, Patrol Agent in Charge, Champlain Border Patrol Station. There are ways to legally immigrate to the United States and sneaking across the border isnt one of them.

On average, CBP arrests 23 wanted persons every day at air, land and sea ports of entry across the United States.
