United States : Ametek Secondary Power Distribution Unit Selected by Aurora Flight Sciences.

Aurora Flight Sciences, a leader in the development and manufacturing of advanced unmanned systems and aerospace vehicles, has selected the Secondary Power Distribution Unit (SPDU) from the Power and Data Systems (PDS) business unit of AMETEK Aerospace & Defense for its XV-24A LightningStrike vertical take-off and landing aircraft. This selection is in addition to Auroras previous utilization of AMETEKs SPDU on the Orion unmanned aircraft.

The Orion is a medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aircraft that holds the world record for flight duration of a remotely controlled unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The record was awarded based on the Orions 80-hour, 2-minute and 52-second flight in December 2014.The compact, lightweight SPDU is capable of distributing 288A at 28 VDC power to up to 54 electrical loads. The unit saves weight, space and cost by eliminating wires, circuit breakers and utility boxes for a wide range of military and commercial aircraft and military vehicles.

While the main purpose of the AMETEK SPDU is to provide circuit and wiring protection, the highly flexible unit offers other features, including arc-fault detection, pulse width modulation, remote load power control, load power monitoring, and automated load shedding, along with prognostic and diagnostic maintenance capabilities. All features are look-up table configurable, allowing use on multiple applications/aircraft without software or hardware changes.

Applications for the SPDU include distributing power to cabin/cockpit lighting; door, heater, potable water, and pump controls; fuel balancing and fire suppression systems; surface actuator controls; and ventilation fans among others.
