United Kingdom : BVEP urges events industry to bidding protocol.

The Ministerial Support Initiative (MSI) will be managed through Visit England who will work with Department of Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to win international congress and convention bids.

The set up was labelled by the Business Visits & Events Partnership (BVEP) following Subvention and Bid Support Practice as part of a review to help the UK events industry to win international business.

The BVEP praised Visit England and the Minister for Tourism, Hugh Robertson MP for seeing the establishment of this plan.

It was confirmed that the minister left DCMS to up this role for the Foreign Office due to the government's ministerial reshuffle.

Simon Gidman, Head of BVEP at Visit England, said: "The support of ministers can have a major impact on the winning of major convention business. Visit England, in partnership with England's leading events destinations, are targeting international events from economic sectors including life sciences, energy, engineering and the creative industries.

These events will bring together leaders from around the world, and to ensure those leaders will discuss and debate the latest issues in their field in England.

The Ministerial Bid Support Initiative is the key element.

The new Minister for Tourism, Helen Grant has added her support for the initiative. The London 2012 Games put UK in the international spotlight. Its important to capitalize on this and attract international events from different sectors to stimulate economic growth and boost the tourism industry.

Michael Hirst, chair of the BVEP, said: "It is now down to destination management organizations and event organizers to make full use of this opportunity and activate the resource that is now in place to win more business."
